It’s the scenario we all dread: a gusty cloudburst takes out some power lines and within hours the grocery shelves are emptied. And then, in a scene sadly familiar to present-day, doomsday America, stores begin to run out. It’s a frightening thought – unless of course, you’re a self-sufficient individual, in which case you’re immune to such upheavals. You’ll still be there, more concerned about crops in your garden than a storm over the hills.
Prepping isn’t just for preppers. Disaster preparedness is an easy and profound way to not only ensure your continued safety and survival, but to also help and protect the people you care about around you. Natural disasters, power failures and unpredictable emergencies can be mitigated by self-sufficiency. When prepared, you can go from victim to a true ‘doer’.
Why We Don’t Prepare
‘But I don’t have time!’ and ‘But nothing will ever happen!’ The excuses abound. Some say that prepping is for survivalists; others think that whatever horrible thing they’ve heard might happen won’t happen to them. So, how do you embark on this journey? Here’s a simple roadmap:
1. Figure Out What You Need First, assess your current state. What disasters have the most chance of affecting your community? Which ones do you need to prepare for? Floods? Earthquakes? Storms? Wildfires? Civil Unrest?
2. Plan Ahead: Write a basic emergency plan. It should include how you’ll communicate, the many methods and alternative ways you can communicate, where you’ll meet, and how you’ll escape the house. A plan really does reduce stress if you have to put it into action.
3. Stock Your Supply Kit: Get organized. Think water, non-perishable foods, first aid kits, flashlights, vital medications, batteries and documents. Good footwear is a must. Many mid-height hiking shoes provide a mix of everyday wear, as well as provide more foot protection and durability in a more challenging environment. It doesn’t all have to come at once. Pick one item a week and get stocked up for a while.
4. Acquire Basic Skills: Knowledge is power! Sign up for a class about basic first aid, how to distill and purify water, how to garden organically, or some other survival skill you might like to develop. Maybe speak with representatives of native tribes in your area and see if any of their members give nature classes. Their knowledge of usable plants in your geographical location can make a difference, as well as be fun for the whole family. Like any other habit, the more you practice it, the easier it will become to handle the next challenge.
